Chainsaw Man

The Facts:

Title: Chainsaw Man

Author and Artist: Tatsuki Fujimoto

First published in Japan by Shueisha Tokyo on 3rd December 2018

Series: Chainsaw Man (12 books and continuing)

Plot summary:

Deji is another teenage orphan, seriously, there are no parents alive in Manga. Deji is left with his father’s huge debt so, of course, he can only bear that burden by befriending a devil. Deji and the devil hunt devils together to slowly pay off the debt.  One day, the loan shark calls in his debt, by way of killing Deji to sell his organs. Following his death, the devil merges with Deji so that Deji can live. With his new body, Deji is forced to join the “Public Safety Devil Hunters” and continues to kill devils.

Graphics:

The graphics in Chainsaw Man are a solid 7/10. Chainsaw Man has a darker tone than other Manga. It doesn’t have as much detail and backstory, rather expecting the reader to just accept things as they are told.  The darker tone is interesting and it really helps add uncertainty to the series.

Context in the Manga Universe:

Chainsaw Man isn’t really big in the Manga universe but its popularity has rapidly increased in 2021-2022 and the release of its anime on October 11th this year is thought to be the most hyped anime of the year.  I guess we will wait and see if this trend continues.

What I like most:

What I enjoy most is how in the New Generation, the main character is an underdog, like Midoriya in My Hero Academia and Asta in Black Clover.  In Chainsaw Man, Deji is an underdog due to a common circumstance, inherited debt, rather than the absence of power.

What I like least:

What I like least is how gory this Manga is. I’m not a fan of blood and decapitation but this Manga is, constantly having blood squirting one way and a head rolling in another.

Interesting fact:

The protagonist Deji has a cameo in the popular manga My Hero Academia. In chapter 259 of My Hero Academia you can see Deji in his hybrid devil form. I love how Manga thrives on this kind of detail.

Recommended for age:

I would recommend this to children aged 14+ because this book is extremely violent and gory as well as the way that some of the people are treated is horrible.

How to explain it to your parents/teacher:

This is a terrifying tale of how an orphan boy must pay off his father’s debt. He is killed for his organs but is rescued by his close friend, a devil and together they hunt devils to protect humanity.

Film/Tv crossover:

Chainsaw Man is yet to have released its Anime, but it will be available at 12:00 AM on the 11th of October 2022. With the Anime yet to be released, there is yet to be a movie. Whilst there is no official Chainsaw Man game there is a game inspired by Chainsaw Man called Chainsaw Dance. It features the characters of Chainsaw Man and is available on Crazy Games.
