The Facts:
Title: One-Punch Man
Author: O N E
Artist: Yusuke Murata
First published in Japan by Shueisha Tokyo on 14th June 2012
Series: One-Punch Man (27 books and continuing)
Plot summary:
Saitama is an exceptionally strong hero, seriously, strength is his thing. He doesn’t have any powers but he makes up for this with immense strength. What he craves is an opponent that can equal his strength. He is bored with his powers and is constantly looking for a challenging opponent

Graphics:
The graphics in One-Punch Man are a 5/10 most of the time. The characters have quite simple designs and there isn’t a lot of shading that usually supports the tone. This is probably accurate as the story is simple, and the drawings match that. Occasionally, when a hero strikes a hero pose, Yusuke Murata really highlights his skills with technical shading showing natural light and rounds out the ranking to a solid overall 7/10.
Context in the Manga Universe:
One-Punch Man isn’t as popular as One Piece or Naruto, but Saitama has been classified as the strongest Manga character ever to have been created. One-Punch Man was the 9 best-selling Manga in 2016 but in 2021 it had dropped down to the 49th best-selling Manga.
What I like most:
What I enjoy most about One-Punch Man is how Genos, Saitama’s pupil looks up to Saitama as an amazing teacher. This is surprising given Saitama has no clue how to teach Genos is just making it up as he goes.
What I like least:
What I like least is how overpowered Saitama is. Saitama is supposed to be really strong from his training, but it doesn’t make sense how his training regimen of 100 push-ups, squats, sit-ups and a 10km run gives him the super strength and the ability to be immune to extreme temperatures.
Interesting fact:
The protagonist Saitama’s design could have been based off of a long-time cartoon hero named Anpanman.
Recommended for age:
I would recommend this to children aged 12+ because whilst the books aren’t super graphic the majority of women are over-sexualised, and the books are quite violent.
How to explain it to your parents/teacher:
This is a heartbreaking series about how a boy became the strongest human in existence trying to become a really strong hero but as a result, is bored by his newfound strength and just wants an opponent to give him purpose.
Film/TV crossover:
One-Punch Man has a successful tv series and films in the making as well as two games.
