The Facts:

Title: My Hero Academia

First published in Japan by Shueisha Tokyo on 7th of July 2014

Series: My Hero Academia (32 books and continuing)

Plot summary:

My Hero Academia follows a young student, Izuku Midoriya on his journey to becoming the number 1 hero. He is born into a world where 98% of people are born with a superpower or “quirk”. Ever since Midoriya was a young infant he wanted to be a hero, but he was born with hero quirks. Despite this, he strives towards his goal, until one day he meets the number one hero All Might who takes Midoriya under his wing and bestows him a sacred quirk, “one for all”, the symbol of peace.

Graphics:

The graphics in My Hero Academia are a solid 8/10. With quirks being in the story it allows Kohei Horikoshi to play with shading to bring to life the characters’ hero quirks and their look through costume designs.

Context in the Manga Universe:

My Hero Academia is a best seller of Shonen Jump. It is part of the New Generation of Shonen manga, that follows Naruto, One Piece and Bleach. With its relatable schoolboy protagonist and his hero quest, My Hero Academia really captures the attention of the young Manga audience.

What I like most:

What I like most is how Midoriya refuses to give up on people and refuses to leave anyone behind. This theme underpins all the major plot turns.

What I like least:

What I like least about this Manga is how we don’t get to see a lot about the other characters. We mainly see Midoriya which makes sense because he is the protagonist but the author seems to only focus on the most powerful side characters Bakugo and Shoto. I would have really liked to see more of Mineta and Lida and other characters and their respective backstories.

Interesting fact:

Some of the character’s designs and fighting styles are based on popular pop culture idols like Spider-Man and the film Alien.

Recommended for age:

I would recommend this to children aged 12+ because whilst it is light-hearted and fun it can also be quite dark with some of the bad guys in the manga kidnapping and experimenting on children.

How to explain it to your parents/teacher:

This is a riveting story about how a young boy becomes a hero despite not being born with superpowers like everyone else in the world. He meets his hero, All Might, who he has idolised since childhood and ultimately surpasses his mentor.

Film/TV crossover:

My Hero Academia has a successful tv series with over 5 seasons, 3 movies and 12 video games as well as 1 cross-over video game.
